Studying with CGA

When courses start

The CGA program runs on a quarterly system with courses that are ten weeks in duration (excluding the national exam); students normally register for one course in a session. This minimizes the time required to complete the program and enables you to focus your study on one course at a time. The sessions run on the following schedule:

Session 1 - Sep - Dec
Session 2 - Dec - Mar
Session 3 - Mar - Jun
Session 4 - Jun - Sep

Study method

Each CGA course includes ten modules designed for self-study. You will complete and submit assignments for feedback and to qualify for the CGA national examination. A set of review questions with suggested solutions is provided with each module to assist you in reinforcing the concepts and skills you have learned. The CGA program's innovative design offers students the flexibility of learning with or without attending in-class lectures. CGA's course material package is both comprehensive and sophisticated. CGA's online delivery provides students access to a wide range of leading-edge learning resources such as audio-video lectures & review classes, online tutors, student chat rooms, and web based module notes.

Workload

The CGA program is a professional accounting program. In order to be successful, you will need commitment, self-discipline and organizational skills. You should anticipate devoting a minimum of 15-20 hours per week to your studies. CGA recommends that you take only one course per session when working full-time.

Exams

Three-hour national examinations are written at the end of each course in the Foundation and Advanced study levels (these exams do not apply to courses for which you received transfer credit). At the PACE level, the exams are four hours in length. You must achieve a minimum grade of 65% on CGA examinations to receive credit for the course. For courses in levels 1-3 (excluding CM1) a portion of your grade is based on bi-weekly quizzes.

To assist you in preparing for exams, a practice examination, suggested solutions and audio-exam reviews are provided. You will also have access to previous CGA exams and solutions, but keep in mind that the practice exam is your best study resource as it is based on your current course material and not out-dated subject matter. Audio-video examination review sessions are available for all courses approximately 10 days before the first exam sitting.

"Being a CGA student does mean that I have to work hard. I have to spend some nights reading and toiling over my studies, and spending time on weekends doing assignments when all my friends seem to be out enjoying life. But I feel proud of my accomplishments and enjoy the payoff that all this hard work offers me."
